Hawkshead Village in the Lake District

There are few villages in the Lake District more interesting then Hawkshead with no lees than thirty eight buildings of architectural or historic interest a fascinating church and connections to William the Conqueror. There are the obligatory literary links as with most Lakes villages.

Sitting between Windermere and Coniston Water, Hawkshead is a great location to stay and a convenient one to visit when in the South Lake District and excellent further access to Grizedale, Esthwaite Water and Sawrey (of Beatrix Potters home fame)  means there is plenty to do and see for all visitors. The village center has a great choice of shops, and refreshment establishments.

As with all parts of the Lake District great outdoor activities are right on the doorstep and Hawkshead is well placed especially for walking and cycling. Many iconic gentle walks such as Tarn Hows, Esthwaite, Claife Station and Windermere Shoreline are close by and slightly more challenging options can be found at Claife, Latterbarrow and Grizedale. Many routes are available in the guidebooks sold throughout the Lakes as well as online and some are downloadable.

For anyone with a bike this is the perfect base. On the Roads head sough on flat(ish) routes towards Lakeside and Grange, for hills head in every other direction to enjoy classic routes and as many or as few hills as your legs can handle and it is is close enough to ride to Coniston, Bowness and Ambleside.
