Ullswater in the Lake District

The Ullswater area and the Eden Valley are to many visitors the most dramatic landscapes in the Lake District. Often overlooked for the central Lakes but always worth the trip over Kirkstone Pass to this most beautiful place.

Sitting to the South West of the market town of Penrith, Ullswater is the second largest of the lakes in the Lake District at nine miles long and offers boating and sailing activities in abundance. Ullswater Steamers offer a scheduled service of boats covering the length of the lake all year round.

At the southern end of the lake Patterdale and Glenridding are popular bases for walking up Englands third highest hill Helvellyn, which from this side is usually scaled via Swirral Edge and Striding Edge. There is a wide range of accommodation for visitors here with camp sites, hostels guest houses and luxury hotels. Self catering and caravan holidays are also available.

At the opposite end of Ullswater is Pooley Bridge where again there is a great range of holiday accommodation and places to eat and drink.

History is never far away with castles churches and historic buildings in abundance in the valley and more recently Sir Donald Campbell set the world water speed record on Ullswater on July 23, 1955, when he piloted the jet-propelled hydroplane Bluebird K7 at 202.32 mph.

Other famous visitors include William Wordsworth and his host of golden daffodils which was inspired by Glencoyne a must visit any time of year but go in Spring and you can see where the famous poet got his inspiration. Dont miss Aira Force which is just round the corner too.

Ever popular with walkers there are many low and high level places to explore with classic routes like Jackes Rake, the Langdale Pikes and many more awaiting those with a bit of time and inclination. On your travels
